The national dialogue is expanding
The PushWord is really getting around! There have been more articles in the last 18 months on midwives and home birth and maternity care than in the previous 18 years.
It is excellent to have this issue increasingly present in the mainstream media, and yet - from time to time - we still we see the pejorative term "lay midwives" ... "Lay" means non-professional, uncertified, and so by definition, Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are not "lay." We promise to keep telling our journalist friends ...
There is much to read and watch on Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), and we encourage you to spread the word and share the vision. The urgency is great as our maternal mortality rate has increased by 50 percent since 1996 - showing us that we are seeing an alarming backslide - and that the decrease in maternal mortality "back when" had much more to do with the introduction of antibiotics, public health advances, etc. than the implication that it was due to birth moving into the hospital.
