My out-of-hospital midwife ROCKED.

The Pushed Way Back Machine

What's Old is New: Read the stories of midwives providing an important part of the continuum of maternity care for women - in out-of-hospital settings no less!

Have a lot of time on your hands this afternoon? Want to do a little somethin somethin for the Big Push campaign? Just start doing some internet research on old newspaper articles about midwives in your state, and see what you can find!

That's what Ernie J. of New Mexico (thank you Ernie!) did one Saturday, and then he sent us the fruits of his labor: the most fascinating articles about licensed midwives from New Mexico, one story from 1976, and the other from August 1964 ... 45 years ago.

Consider helping us to find and post more of these archived Internet goodies, which show the incredible value to society that professionally trained midwives who are licensed and regulated by their states in fact bring to bear for mothers and families.

E-mail the treasures you find with "The Pushed Way Back Machine" in the subject line to Steff.

Thank you so much!!

The midwives in this story are not Certified Nurse-Midwives, (for those of you who know that was the only midwife credential available in those days), although there were CNMs in New Mexico at the time ... but, rather, the midwives in this story are local /parteras/ in the Hispanic and Native American communities. Ernie J. says the type face is a bit hard to follow, but it's worth pushing through to the last few paragraphs. "Sort of funny, sort of touching, sort of inspiring," he says.

Ernie J. found another! It's an Associated Press article from Connecticut.
